While the first 1/2 of the book is compelling, the second 1/2 was thoroughly confusing. With so many new characters and flashbacks I could not follow what happened to the original story. This is the second book I read by this author with the same format of writing a very interesting story then time hopping centuries in the turn of the page. Very disconcerting. If they had just finished the story with the original people both books would have been worth reading. I will not read another. The first part of this book was riveting and I found myself quite absorbed in the life of Betty and Seamus and their daughter Isabel. They were both trying so hard to keep ahead, Betty to the point of going behind his back to get the life she felt she deserved, and Seamus being constantly distracted by his political involvements. The second part, future generations, became so involved with so many relatives, very hard to follow, no concentration on any one particular character. I was glad when I finished it- didn't want to give up on it but it was a task to complete!
